Le Carré Hermès: Yes or No

Many Hermès scarfies have been waiting for this for years…Now Hermès has finally decided to issue a book documenting it’s scarves from the first one debuted in 1937 right up to the present day.

I was very excited when I first heard this news. As a scarf lover, I would love to own such a book that would have covered each scarf from day one, with a brief description of the artists and the stories behind. However, I figured out later that there are only less than 200 scarves featured in this book and with very few descriptions. It is indeed beautifully made, but sadly not really the one I’ve been expecting.

My dear fellow scarfies, what’s your thoughts? ;-)

Hi, this is my first comment here, your blog is really very nicely done :-).

I was debating with myself about this book too, but in the end I ordered it.

Hey Elysium, thanks for dropping by and welcome! :-D

As to the book, after seeing the pictures MT posted. Now I prefer to have a look in person first. Hope there are already some copies in store. BTW, did you pre-order the english version? ;-)

hmmm…how much does the book cost? I have been so froogle on books since the internet becomes my first resource. Haha …I guess I am not as hard core as you about scarves, so I would not spend too much on the book although it may be well worth the money as far as the historical value this may have. :)My husband always jokes about me buying books; he says: “Honey, who will buy books when there is a such thing called Google?” heehee…My thought is that if it is not something you really want, don’t buy it; otherwise it would just become a drag for your life. Just take a look at my overloaded closet. :( *Sigh*

Thanks a lot dear! Really appreciate your input. :-)

It costs 84 EURO from Hermes, but you can get it for less from amazon. hehe~~ I am hesitating because I’ve seen discussions on this book and have thought it is THE ONE. But it turns out that this is not exactly the book I wished. :-(

P.S. your smart hubby cracked me up. lol~~
P.P.S. would love to take a look at your closet, I am sure you’ve got so many treasures. heihei~~

I ordered the English version from British Amazon, the book by Koto Bolofo slipped through as well. There will be another month or so before they ship.

Some of the SS10 twills are up now, so far nothing has really caught my interest.

That’s kinda strange, because amazon.de says it will be delivered in April 2010!? Hmm…I have no idea what’s really going on with the publisher.

Wow, SS10 stuffs are already in store now, I am gonna take a look. Do you find any interesting scarves? ;-)

I don’t think the scarves are in store yet, in fact I think it took some detective work to get all the pictures from the Hermes webpage. Of the new designs I like Quintessense and H Comme Histories the most, how about you?

  8. Posted November 10, 2009 at 6:33 pm | Permalink

Both Quintessense and H Comme Histories look nice~~ I would like something in purple this time because I don’t have any scarves in this color yet.

Can’t wait to see the whole SS10 collection. :-)

I’m not really a fan of Hermes, but the book looks cool and I would say it is definitely worth collecting for any fashionista :P

BTW, I noticed couple of super brands issue their retrospective books at the same time …. How interesting… considering the economic panorama and stronger competition in fashion industry… I’m wondering if it is a way to re-confirm their cult status…

Thank you for your comment shaonian. I am a fan and I love Hermes, but if it doesn’t 100% make my heart sing. I’d rather pass. ;-)

Hmm…interesting observation, I didn’t know that other brands also issued this kind of books. And I am not sure if Hermes did so for this particular reason because they actually beat the recession pretty well.

In my part of world, they are the only high-end brand who don’t really suffer. Even in the States, where the financial market has been affected the most. Hermes US posted a 3% increase in sales for the first quarter of 2009 and a 12% rise in the second quarter.

The curious case of Hermes, hehe… :-D

Qiuyue, actually I have an honest question ( hope you wouldn’t be mad at me… And I really don’t mean to offend… ) I know the Hermes scarves are applauded everywhere and incredibly highly acclaimed…. but sometimes I just don’t really understand why… I can understand the bag, for its highest quality and all being handmade, etc…. but as for the scarf… I’m kinda lost… I’m sure other brands can also make really good silk scarves… So the key is the pattern design, isn’t it?

  14. Posted November 12, 2009 at 10:17 am | Permalink

Dear shaonian, you are not offend at all. :-)

Yeah, making good silk scarves is not a big deal for many fashion houses. But I guess the difference is that no one does it so seriously like Hermes, the themes, the designs, the colors, the stories behind and last but not least the quality. IMHO, many of their scarves are truly pieces of art which could be framed and hanged on the wall.

My scarf book arrived yesterday, I enjoyed it a lot reading it. The text was not very long, although the essay format of the text was quite charming. Some anecdotes about the scarves were given, but most of the time the scarf names just flow by. I was surprised though that many scarves from the recent seasons appeared.

  16. Posted November 27, 2009 at 10:12 am | Permalink

Elysium, wow, I thought they’ll arrive much later. Congrats! Do you set your heart on a particular design after reading the book? hehe~~

BTW, I took the Twilly with Mors scarf ring picture yesterday. Take a look here, hope it helps. ;-)

Well, I didn’t find any particular design that I want to hunt down, which is healthy thing I think. However I have a better idea about the inspirations to the Hermes scarves now and appreciate a few designs more than I did before. All in all I do not regret at all that I purchased the book.

Thanks for the photos, they are wonderful as usual! But I remember that I asked about the twilly as a belt? The fifth picture with the twilly and Mors ring as a bracelet looks really nice!

  18. Posted November 27, 2009 at 3:37 pm | Permalink

Ah…sorry, my mistake! I thought you asked about the Mors ring with twilly as wristband, not waistband. ;-)

Well, as a waistband/belt is very simple. You just tie one end of the twilly with one ring of Mors (the side with only one circle). Go through the other side of Mors(the side with both circles) with the other end of the twilly and fix it by pulling the twilly out of one circle. Hope you understand what I mean.

Glad to know you enjoyed the carre book! :-D

I was the one who read too quickly… :P

So for most people a twilly is long enough to go all the way around the waist? That sounds great!

Btw, have you seen the carre page for the TV series Real Clothes? It’s quit nicely done.

I am a size 26 and the twilly fits as a belt with Mors. :-)

Thanks for the link, love it! I have the same scarf ring showed in style 1 too. A very practical one~~

I am 27, so maybe it works for me as well if I squeeze a little.

I guess you mean style 1 in set 7? All the scarf ring designs from Hermes look so stylish.

Yeah, I think it will fit you as well. And that’s the ring I mentioned. ;-)

I must say I am kind of disappointed with the quality of the book I bought at Amazon, the pictures don’t look as good as the version issued by Hermes.

Oh Birkinmary, I am so sorry to hear this. Is it possible to return it?
