The Dreamers

We went to watch Inception with friends last night. It has a nice concept and stunning visual effects but somehow failed to touch my heart.

I actually enjoy movies that are intelligent in plot, but Inception just lack the profundity of story telling. The plot is too twisty for it’s own good which makes me care less and less about whether it was reality or dream. Let alone the weak character development and that cliché Hollywood ending.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t regret watching Inception. However, this is certainly not a thought-provoking and intelligent film I’ve expected and this is definitely not something I would love to watch over and over again.

Inception could have been a first class action movie or an outstanding drama piece. It just wanted to be both and achieved neither, but hey, it might be just me though. So what’s your thought? ;-)

    喂喂,小妮子,额也刚看咯inception,看滴偶头晕目眩还不知道讲滴是啥。当然那些视觉冲击是很棒的,但是也没有touch my heart.

And also don’t get me wrong, I don’t regret watching Inception. 哈哈,偷笑一下,又一次灵犀咯~~~

That’s too bad, I heard good things about Inception although I’ve learned not to rush to blockbuster movies.
When I heard about the plot, I thought it was creative–love sci-fi that doesn’t rely on special effects and crazy machines but create characters.
Guess I will have to watch Gattaca again while resisting getting the Inception.

jibjab, how smart are you! I wasn’t really interested when I saw the trailer in theater back in June, but was encouraged to see the movie because of all the positive reviews.

For me it is too overrated and there was very little creative-love, I don’t even feel for any of the characters since if I wasn’t busy solving all the puzzles, I saw scenes with gun battles, car chases and explosions all the time… I just can’t understand the “intelligent” hype since “complicated” is not “complex”.

    BTW, I LOVE Gattaca! :-)

Inception is quite an idea if it ever becomes a reality. DH thought it would be a wonderful treatment for terminally-illed people, by incepting an idea that they are not in pain, or by extracting their negative thoughts associated with illnesses, thus easing the ending of their lives.

I think the best part about the movie is not just about the plots, but how the story teller is trying to sparkle a thought in you, perhaps is what meant by Inception. ;-)

Oh yeah… personally I like Shutter Island more (Don’t understand why I keep comparing the two movies :-P ). The dark side of the story and the melancholy ambiance of the movie attracted me most…

DH was joking that Leo tried to drive himself crazy in all these roles he’d been playing :-D

I really need to watch it. I’m a big fan of Di Caprio. Now I’m afraid to get disapointed. I’ll tell you

Fay, your DH is so kind. I am afraid that if inception would be done IRL one day, there are more ppl trying to take advantage of it instead of doing something good. ;-)

BTW, it is really funny coz I couldn’t help to compare Inception with SI too! Maybe because the two roles Leo played do have a lot in common. Personally I too think SI deserves more praise and attention than Inception. Oh these thrilling details, surreal tensions and the dark haunting cinematography, just beautiful!

Gaelle, would love to hear opinions from a Leo fan. :-)

I do science in Argentina. Our rsaeerch community is small as compared to other countries (specially US), we have less fund sources and this is a country much affected by wrong politics. I have written many grant proposals in my carrer, I’m 47 years old, many of which never got funded. Often many times I thought I was the victim of some sort of friends’ club that fund themselves. Although I do not deny that may exists, everytime I got a grant it was because I looked back on previous rejections, read them carefully and non-passionately and talked to people I respect to get a real perspective on what I believe is self evident about my ideas. In conclusion, I think is good to know people, people who is succesful, but to discuss science with them and then get your head and hands back to the keyboard and write a better proposal. Grant writing is a skill that needs to be learned and trained.
