The Smart & the Pretty

What accessories you can live without? In my case, earrings are not my must-haves (haven’t been wearing them for years). I know, shame on me because I got my ears pierced when I was nine. ;-P Instead I have a weakness for beautifully made belts.

The pretty vernice bow waist belt is something I had my eyes on since last year, I like the fact that it can wonderfully turn a plain outfit into something special, feminine but not girly.

Having made a resolution to buy more classics, I consider another smart reversible belt justified. ;-) It complements my other belts perfectly coz each of them is unique in its own way. The two reversible belts are in Iris (Swift)/Rubis (Epsom) and Gold (Togo)/Black (Box) while the Rafale is in Etoupe (Clémence). It’s nice to have three belts in five different colors and leather types, enough to mix & match with different outfits.

Why do Fashion Insiders dress so badly?

It has been raining non-stop since Friday, so we spent the whole weekend at home, watching movies, surfing the web and lazing around on the the couch… The movies are too cheap to mention, but I am glad that I came across an interesting article from Franca Sozzani at vogue.it. I really enjoyed reading it, so I’d like to share it with you today. :-)

The gist of the article is about this question: “Most of the people who work in fashion don’t dress well. They don’t know how to match things or wear things that fit them. Maybe a strategy to get photographed and interviewed?”

Here is the answer from Ms. Sozzani:

“I am glad someone noticed, although I think most people realize it in the end as well. I couldn’t agree more. When you go to the shows you get to see everyone, near the location of the shows you end up walking along side people in the industry, journalists, that are dressed so badly you feel ashamed to be seen with them.

Why? For pictures and interviews. To feel eccentric, to please the bloggers, the photographers that work for unknown magazines, too cheap to remember the name. Always publishing the worst. It’s part of the game.

Why does fashion have to be extravagant? Ridiculous? I don’t know. Do this people realize they look ridiculous? Absolutely not, because there is always someone who is ready to say that they are unique. They believe them? Of course they do.

What should we get from that? That people in fashion have bad taste? No, but that they want to be different without realizing that it’s not enough to dress differently for a few weeks during the year, it should be innate. If not it’s a masquerade.

All of this makes fashion look ridiculous, and it doesn’t add anything to it. Fashion is creativity, a game, a fun game. It should be spontaneous when applied to yourself. If not it’s like building a monster in the lab, we all know the story of Frankenstein. We know how it ends. At times it’s tragic because it makes you lose sight of who you are, it confuses you, you don’t know who you are anymore. You become your own caricature.

You are unable to tell the truth from fiction. Almost like a movie critic that sees lots of movies ending up thinking he is the protagonist of all of them. To me it’s a tragedy, fashion makes you live a lie, people help the lie, and you become the victim of it. They make fun of you and you don’t even realize. Humiliating. But it’s true. Fiction doesn’t help the situation.

If all of this is for a picture or an interview, it’s worth it according to most. They don’t have their own story and never will. They are meteorites that die fast. This is not fashion. These are walk-ons of fashion. There are minorities.”

Winter Outfit (5): Navy Blues

After two busy and hectic days, I need something to calm my nerves. Easy listening blues from Tom Waits helps, wearing a cozy sweater dress in quiet navy makes me feel relaxed as well… What’s your way to wind down after a long day?

Enjoy your weekend everyone! :-)

Winter Outfit (4): Sparkling Night

How many of you have to work tomorrow? If you are one of these unlucky few, don’t be sad coz you are not alone my friend. lol~~ I know this really sucks, but hey, at least we can organize a nice night out to celebrate. ;-D

Happy Chinese New Year! May the year of the rabbit be a happy, healthy and prosperous one for all of you!

COS Spring/Summer 2011

It’s still cold outside but it’s never too early to start planning some Spring/Summer must haves, so I decided to start with my favorite brand: COS. At the first glance of their new season’s lookbook, I was very pleased to see all these neutral palettes, it seems to meet my needs quite well.

However, after viewing each look, only this gorgeous modern trench made my heart sing (you disappointed me, COS, but my wallet begins to love you, haha). I just can’t wait to try it on, if the fit is great and the material is nice, one of these beauties will have a happy new home.

BTW, don’t you agree that the styling of this look is…let’s say: tricky? I prefer the look without these socks. Trendy or not, I’d never go out wearing them this way. ;-P

Style Inspiration: Emmanuelle Alt

Since I am still in the mood for Paris, it’s the perfect time to pay tribute to one of the most stylish Parisian: Emmanuelle Alt. Known for her rock ’n’ roll style – big-shouldered jackets, skinny jeans and killer heels. Alt is the very definition of tough yet sophisticated chic.

Frankly, being a very ordinary and uncool gal, I can’t see myself pulling off something this edgy (I do can imagine how awkward I’ll look then, rofl). However, this doesn’t bother me to admire her sense of style, she found something works for her and make it her own signature.

Everybody wants to look as cool as her, but no one embodies edgy rock style with an attitude like her. So maybe the best advice from the new editor in chief of Vogue Paris is: get inspired but find you own style. ;-P We all know there is only one Emmanuelle Alt, but there is only one of you & me as well…

Style Resolutions for 2011

I am not really that kind of person who makes resolutions every year coz I know I’ll probably end up sticking to none of them. ;-P However, for 2011, I do like to write down some style resolutions that I want to keep. My goal is to build a perfectly balanced wardrobe filled with only my favorites, so the plan is to:

  1. Invest in classics.
  2. Understand needs vs. wants: to avoid impulse or regrettable buys.
  3. Focus on neutral staples: I need more neutrals to complement my already colorful wardrobe.
  4. Be true to myself: buy clothes that only march to my own beat, instead of being seduced by trends & sales.

Ok, I guess that’s pretty enough. 2011 has just started but I’ve already returned three of my impulse sale purchases. What I am keeping are things I truly love and need: two white shirts, a navy skirt and a stone gray trench coat. You see, making resolutions is a good thing. It worked even for me, at least for now. lol!

We are leaving for Paris next week, I’ll keep you posted whether my plan still works in the city of light. ;-) So until my next post, stay happy and chic!

Winter Outfit (3): Cheerful Monday

It’s finally getting warmer, the snow has been melting the past few days. Usually I don’t like this kind of weather because it is muddy, wet and dirty everywhere. But now it doesn’t bother me any more, thanks to my rainboots~~ ;-)

Have a great start of the week everyone!
